I am convinced that the greatest tragedy is the idea that a human being can somehow find & sustain fulfillment outside of oneself.   We have become a culture based on unconscious consumption & we have been manipulated into believing that the external circumstances of our existence determines the internal.  This is the silent epidemic that is leading to the destruction of the human spirit.
